Artisan & small producer competition

For commercial marmalade producers who use the 'open-pan' method

About the competition

In 2025 we are thrilled to be running the popular Artisan Awards for the second time in Birregurra. The aim of this competition is to encourage and support small, artisan producers and provide support for their trade. 

 

Artisan sold marmalade made in small batches using the open pan method. Judged using the same criteria as the Homemade Category.

 

Artisan winners receive Gold, Silver, Bronze or Highly commended ratings and winners are able to publicise their achievements to promote their business. 

Entries open: 11th August 2025

Entries close: 26th September 2025

Judging: October 2025

Award presentations: 25th October 2025

Artisan competition categories

 

1. Seville orange

Must be made using only Seville oranges, sugar, lemon juice and water. The fresher the fruit, the better the marmalade.

2. Grapefruit

Any marmalade that contains grapefruit. This will include 3 or 4 fruit marmalades that contain grapefruit.

3. Cumquat

Any marmalade that contains cumquats. This will include 3 or 4 fruit marmalades that contain cumquats.

4. Any other citrus

For marmalade which does not fit any other category, with one or more kinds of citrus as the primary ingredient. Please make sure to list all your ingredients in the entry form.

5. Native fruits & flavours

Be inspired to create a marmalade using Australian native ingredients. It may be a traditional citrus marmalade enhanced with bush flavours, or made using native citrus such as finger lime.

6. Made with alcohol

Add a touch of something boozy.... Cointreau, Whisky, Gin.... You be the creator!

It's your chance to shine and promote your brand.

1. You can enter by completing the form below and paying online.

2. Create your marmalade.

3. Send in your jars of marmalade, by mail or hand delivery, to:

Entry instructions​​

  • Sealed jar for judging, without company branding, but with a plain label with the name of the marmalade, the category being entered and a list of ingredients.

  • Please also include a copy of the entry form along with your jars.

Entry fee

The competition fee is $20 per jar for the Artisan division.

You are welcome to enter multiple times per category.
